Best Student for the Job: Aniya Cole

“Don’t wait until you feel completely ready, do it scared.”

Ask Aniya Cole and she'll tell you a little fear can go a long way. Aniya is currently a student at Prairie View A&M University, a public, historically Black land-grant university in Prairie View, Texas. She is enrolled in the professional concentration of the Bachelor of Architecture program. This program is a five-year undergraduate track structured to lead directly into enrollment in the Master of Architecture professional degree, providing a continuous path toward licensure and professional practice.

Her introduction to the construction industry began with her father's interest in real estate, which exposed her early on to the process of building and development. "Wanting to take that curiosity further," she says, "I became drawn to architecture as a way to not only understand how buildings are created, but to actively design and contribute to the spaces people live in every day.

Her course work is giving her the chance to work with materials and design. "What I love most about my courses is the studio culture and the hands-on learning environment it creates. Having direct access to the fabrication center, including the fit model lab and woodshop, allows me to physically translate design concepts into built form, reinforcing the connection between design, materials, and construction," she explains.

As a student, Aniya has several hurdles to cross in pursuit of her degree, but NAWIC has helped. "Developing a portfolio that appeals to firms while seeking internships has been a significant challenge for me as a student," she says, "However, my involvement in organizations like NAWIC, AIAS, and NOMAS has helped me grow as a networker, gain industry exposure, and build my confidence to engage more actively within the field."

Asked what currently excites her the most in the industry, Aniya comments, "Advancements in BIM technology and the expansion of direct-entry training programs are what I find most exciting, they increase collaboration and provide more accessible pathways into the industry for women."

Even at this early stage in her construction career, Aniya still sees opportunities to change the industry for women. "I hope to build upon the progress made by the hardworking women and organizations that have paved the way for greater inclusion in the construction industry, including groups like NAWIC. Their dedication to mentorship and professional development has played a critical role in supporting women like me entering the field, and I look forward to contributing to that ongoing work by fostering connection, confidence, and opportunity for future professionals."

Looking to the future, Aniya has a clear plan to advance her career and to give back. "I aspire to become a licensed architect and project manager and building a strong foundation in both design and construction leadership. Long term, I hope to engage in industry research, development, and advocacy by creating early-exposure programs that introduce women and underrepresented minorities to design and construction, beginning at the elementary school level."

How has being a NAWIC student member helped? "NAWIC membership has significantly contributed to my growth by building my confidence and connecting me to scholarship opportunities. The mentorship and support I've received have helped me develop strong writing and self-advocacy skills, empowering me to pursue professional opportunities with assurance."

Aniya has some unique advice for other young women who are interested in getting into the construction industry through college or trade school, even if they are a bit hesitant. "Don't wait until you feel completely ready, do it scared," she suggests. "Explore different spaces within the industry to identify where you can add the most value and consider volunteering with nonprofit homebuilders to gain hands-on experience and discover what aspects of the construction process genuinely excite you."
