Speaker: Loretta Mulberry
Session Description:
If you were in a life-or-death situation, would you feel safe having only been trained in your second language? Thousands of workers across the US suffer fatal workplace injuries each year. Sadly, fatal and non-fatal injuries on the jobsite impact a disproportionately high ratio of Spanish-speaking workers compared to their native English-speaking team members. Organizations in the construction industry dedicate significant resources to keeping the workplace safe for all employees, yet safety and training materials are often available only in English. This means that a huge part of our construction workforce is not getting full access to information that is designed to keep them healthy and whole. By translating important documents into Spanish, or any other languages spoken within a team, employers can ensure that their carefully crafted processes and procedures are having a meaningful impact on each and every person, regardless of their linguistic or cultural background. These language services improve efficiency and team morale, reduce delays and damages caused by miscommunications, and enhance safety measures for all.
